My doctor prescribed ketoconazole shampoo. How should I coordinate routine care?
Ask the prescribing doctor two questions: how to space use of the medicated wash and routine scalp care, and whether any care product ingredients could interfere with treatment. Medicated washes such as ketoconazole and selenium disulfide have evidence for treating dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (PMID 12476017). Scalp care may support routine cleansing but does not replace treatment.
A care provider should be willing to adjust appointments around the doctor’s instructions and should not promote products as replacements for the prescribed plan. Bring the doctor’s instructions to your visit so the arrangements are clear.
