There is no universal answer. Non-shaven procedures have a more challenging surgical field, are technically harder and take longer. Published reports indicate controllable transection rates with proper technique, but greater operator experience is needed.

The Park series reported an overall transection rate of 8.2% and a calculated density of 2.2 hairs per unit. It explicitly notes longer procedure times and poorer graft survival conditions with prolonged time outside the body, so the daily unit count must be limited accordingly.
